What is the meaning of Freedom in the present context?

A Casual Corner of Thoughts

August 15 is an important day for all of us Indians. We are celebrating Independence Day ever since our great Freedom fighters achieved this freedom from sort of slavery in 1948. This is the day were India became an Independent Nation.

When we think about Indian Independence, we remember reverely the sacrifices of Mangal Pandey, Raj Guru, Rani Chennamma, Vallabh Bhai Patel, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Subhash Chandra Bose, Tippu Sultan and not forgetting Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi fondly known as ‘Mahatma’. We owe a lot to these and other leaders who have sacrificed their lives for the sake of our country.

What is freedom? ‘Freedom is the power or right to act, speak or think as one wants”. Indian constitution provides for various rights which could be treated as freedom. Let’s see the present situation of 2020. We can’t have freedom of movement; we don’t exercise freedom of speech face to face etc. Moreover, we are being slaves of many things where we must think of freedom.

1) Addictions:

Young and old, all of us addicted to many things.
a) Addicted to mobile and social media. Earlier day’s people used to sit around and speak. Now we find people browsing on the mobiles most of the time. Sound of a notification is enough to be distracted. Young adults are addicted to games like PubG where they spend hours… sometime till early morning.

b) Addicted to smoking and\or alcohol: People without or sometimes with the knowledge of the harms of these addictions continue to smoke or consume alcohol. These days a reason given is “what else there is like an entertainment?” Friends, this kind of entertainment will cost you heavily.

Let’s be aware of this, let’s not be slaves of addictions. Freedom from these is necessary and immediate action is needed.

2) Laziness:

In some of the households there are a few members who do not contribute anything for the benefit of the family. These days people sleep late, get up late thus rhythm of life has been affected. A type of redundancy which will harm us in the long run. Being active, doing some exercises like walking, jogging or yoga, practice of meditation or pranayama will help us to be active and awake.

Let’s have freedom from ‘laziness’ because once you develop this and continue for a longer period you become lethargic, you will end up gaining weight, losing health too.

3) Thinking patterns:

Our thoughts play a major role in our well being. A single thought can create one’s destiny. What are our thoughts these days? How do we cope up with the pandemic or lock downs? Is working from home causing stress? If you are a businessman how are you dealing with the present low? If you are a teacher how are you coping up with deducted salary and online teaching? If you are a student what are your thoughts about not being able to meet your classmates and sometimes internet problems while the online classes are on?

We have to remember not to stress, take these things in a stride. Things will improve sooner or later. Our worrisome thoughts will cause damage to us. We need to have freedom from these kinds of thoughts.

So, let’s be free from being slaves of many things and salute those who fought for the Independence of our country. Happy Independence Day!
